
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
When you’re working in a Class 100 environment, heating is about way more than just getting the temperature right. It’s a battle against particles. Most standard heating elements are a nightmare in these spaces. They off-gas or shed tiny micro-particles that you can’t even see, but they’ll absolutely wreck your wafers and optical components. We deal with this by sticking to high-purity fused quartz infrared (IR) lamps.
Why the quartz matters
We use synthetic fused quartz for the envelope. Why? Because it can take a massive thermal shock without cracking. More importantly, it doesn’t release those nasty volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when things get hot. Cheap tubes are usually made of low-grade glass. Those tend to flake or outgas, which is the last thing you want. Our quartz is spec’d so that nothing sheds—not even during the initial ramp-up.
Power and space
Nobody wants a giant, bloated oven taking up the whole floor. To keep the footprint small while still hitting the heat flux you need, we focus on the wattage-to-length ratio. By using high-wattage shortwave lamps, you can keep the heating zone tight. That gives you faster response times and much better PID control. But here’s the catch: high heat density means the lamp surface gets scorching. You’ve got to be smart about your cooling fans and shielding. If your airflow is weak, you’re risking a meltdown of the lamp sockets or the oven chassis.Don’t skimp on the fans.
Getting it installed
We keep things simple. We use industry-standard connectors like R7s or SK15, so when a lamp eventually burns out, you just drop in a new one and keep moving. You won’t find any adhesives or organic coatings here. No glues, no resins—just mechanical connections. It keeps the air clean. One last tip: make sure your power supply is rock solid. Voltage spikes are the enemy. Even a 10% swing in input voltage can shift your IR wavelength and heat output. That throws your whole process out of whack. Stick to the rated voltage, and your cycle times will stay predictable.
