When you’re picking out an infrared heater for the bathroom, your first instinct might be to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really all about the size of the room. If you don’t match the wattage to the actual space, you’re either going to waste a ton of electricity or end up shivering in the shower.
Don’t create a “hot spot”
If you’ve got a tiny powder room, you don’t need a beast of a heater. Throwing a 600W or 800W lamp into a cramped space usually backfires. You end up with one scorching hot spot right under the lamp, while the rest of the room stays freezing. For those big master bathrooms, the trick is to spread the love. Instead of one massive, overheating lamp, we usually suggest a few lower-wattage ones spaced out across the ceiling. It feels more natural, and it keeps the lamps from burning out too quickly.
How the heat actually works
Unlike a standard heater, infrared doesn’t bother heating the air. It goes straight for the objects—and you. The energy travels in a straight line. This is where ceiling height comes into play. If your ceilings are high and your wattage is too low, that heat just fades away before it ever reaches you. You won’t feel a thing. So, take a look at the distance from the ceiling to the floor. The bigger that gap, the more power you’ll need to actually feel that warmth on your skin.
The trade-off: Speed vs. Power
Higher wattage means you get warm almost instantly. A 1000W lamp is fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. That much power pulls a lot from your electrical panel. If you load up too many high-wattage lamps on one circuit, you’re probably going to trip a breaker or, worse, overheat your wiring. Definitely double-check what your home can handle before you go overboard with the wattage.
