
Keeping Your Infrared Towel Rails Safe (and Shock-Free)
Designing a heater for a bathroom is basically a fight against steam. You’ve got constant moisture in the air, which is a nightmare for electricity. If things aren’t sealed perfectly, you risk current leaking where it shouldn’t—meaning someone could get a nasty shock just by touching the rail. We don’t play around with that. The battle against leaks To stop electricity from wandering, we use high-grade quartz glass. It’s great at blocking current. But the real danger zone is where the tungsten filament meets the outer housing. That’s where most heaters fail. We fix this by using ceramic-to-metal seals at the terminals. Think of it as a tight, waterproof plug. It keeps the dampness out of the lamp, so the filament doesn’t burn out early and, more importantly, it stops the outer shell from becoming “live.” Wiring and grounding We use reinforced insulation and wiring that can handle serious heat. We don’t want the plastic jackets melting and shorting out against the metal rail. But here’s the thing: even with the best insulation in the world, you still need to make sure the rail is properly grounded to the building’s earth. It’s your safety net. If something catastrophic happens inside the unit, a grounded chassis is the only thing that guarantees you’re safe. The trade-off Now, there is a catch. Because we use thicker insulation and heavy-duty sealed connectors, the heating element is a bit bulkier. You might notice it takes a few seconds longer to get hot compared to those open-air lamps you see in factories. It’s a small price to pay for a heater that’s actually safe to have next to a shower. A few tips for installation When you’re wiring these in, please use IP-rated junction boxes. Any exposed connection is basically a magnet for condensation. Once moisture settles on those terminals, it can sneak right past the internal insulation. Do yourself a favor: use heat-shrink tubing or silicone potting to seal everything up tight. It takes an extra minute, but it’s the only way to be sure.
