You’ll see “IP55 rated” on almost every patio heater box these days. But here’s the thing: the metal shell usually isn’t what gives out. It’s the spot where the wires enter the housing. When those high-wattage infrared elements kick in, the heat doesn’t just blast forward. It creeps backward, right toward the electrical connections. If that seal isn’t tight, you’ve basically built a heat bridge.
Why Most Heaters Eventually Pop
A lot of factories just throw in a basic rubber grommet and call it a day. The problem? Rubber hates heat. Over time, those grommets dry out. They get brittle. They crack. Once that happens, moisture and salt air—especially if you’re near the coast—creep right in and hit the live terminals. That’s how you get carbon tracking, and that’s how you get a short circuit. Not a great way to end a party. We do things differently. We use a high-temp silicone potting process. Instead of just “plugging” the wire, we basically encapsulate the whole transition point. It creates a chemical bond that blocks water and can handle temperatures up to 200°C without breaking a sweat. Plus, it keeps the wires from vibrating loose or burning through the insulation.
Spotting the Cheap Stuff
Low-cost units usually cut corners here to speed up the assembly line. They use generic PVC sleeves that literally melt over time. You can actually see this if you look closely at where the wire exits. If there’s a gap or it feels a bit loose? It’s going to fail. We combine a precision-molded seal with industrial-grade heat-shrink tubing. It’s not the fastest way to build a heater, but it’s why our units still work after three brutal winters.
The Trade-off
I’ll be honest with you: this makes field repairs a pain. Since everything is sealed tight, you can’t just pull the wires out to swap a part. You’d have to cut the seal. You’re trading “easy to fix” for “won’t short out during a rainstorm.” For most commercial setups, that’s a trade worth making. I’d rather spend an extra hour on a rare repair than spend every weekend replacing heaters that fried themselves.
