Let’s be honest about bathroom mirror heaters. They’re great for killing fog and keeping you warm, but they have a built-in expiration date. Those infrared lamps last a long time, sure—thousands of hours—but eventually, they just quit. In most setups, that’s a nightmare. The lamp is baked into the unit, so when one tube burns out, you’re basically tossing the whole mirror assembly in the trash. It’s wasteful and, frankly, a pain in the neck. We decided to do it differently. The “Slide-and-Swap” Approach Instead of burying the heating element, we built a modular chassis. Think of it like a cartridge. The heating tube sits in its own slide-in bracket, which keeps the fragile quartz glass far away from the electrical wiring. You don’t have to wrestle with soldering irons in a cramped wall cavity. You just pull the module, unplug it, and drop in a fresh tube. It’s that simple. The Tricky Part: Heat vs. Glass Working with high-wattage infrared isn’t without its challenges. These tubes get hot. Really hot. If they’re too close to the mirror, that heat can actually stress the silvering on the glass or, in worst-case scenarios, cause it to crack. We spent a lot of time dialing in the exact mounting distance to stop that from happening. You still get that instant warmth, but you’ll want to make sure your bathroom has decent ventilation. If the room gets too stuffy, the thermal cutoff switches will kick in to keep things safe. Fixing it in Five Minutes When your unit needs a refresh—usually around the five-year mark—you don’t need to call in a full electrical crew or tear your wall apart. Here is how it actually goes: Kill the power. Pop the modular clip. Slide the old tube out. Plug the new one in. That’s it. We went with standardized connectors so the new part fits perfectly into the old footprint. No modifications, no drilling, no swearing at the hardware. It turns what used to be a whole afternoon of frustration into a quick part swap.
